Campaign to reduce street clutter

Have spent the week conducting vigorous campaign to stop an absurd forest of unnecessary street posts appearing throughout Hammersmith. We already spend so much time dealing with visual information in the city, that surely is aesthetic as well as financial and environmental madness to increase it simply to comply with pointless bureaucracy. The Council claim that, even in well signposted streets they need to comply with the law meticulously, instead of find a different, creative solution. This means signposts in every bay and every 15 - 30 m apart - a total of 15km of steel tubing in Hammermith alone. Does this mean the whole of the country will be filled with steel posts too? We are trying to find out.

Paris

If you go to Paris go to Musee de la Bourdelle near Montparnasse. It's the house and studio of a 19th century artist (not that interesting) but a fantastic place with a crowded basement of plaster casts, and interventions by contemporary artists. The current Director is leaving and at the moment there's a really good show with several artists including Boltanski and Deacon and others until September.

Solid or not?

Have just finished this series of drawings and taken them to the framers to see how I can protect them but keep them uncluttered. Am enjoying how they are read as either solid or deep holes. I experimented with digging holes into the plaster of the studio - it did look like a hole but no more really than the shapes do on paper, and it felt more as if I were playing with illusions.

The Perfect Gallery

Went to a fantastic exhibition at the Pump House Gallery in Battersea Park- just opened. "Pump House Gallery has invited German artist Christian Jankowski to realise an ambitious solo project that will take place in spring 2010. With the artist’s aim to create ‘The Perfect Gallery’ this will mark a significant development in both Jankowski’s practice and the programming aspirations of Pump House Gallery.

For ‘The Perfect Gallery’ Jankowski has contracted an interior designer and team of builders to undertake real renovations to the gallery and in conjunction will produce a video that follows the format of an interior-design makeover programme presented by Gordon Whistance. The episode’s aim will be to create ‘the perfect gallery’ from the Pump House Gallery’s idiosyncratic fusion of 19^th-century architecture and 1980s interior styling.

As dictated by the reality TV genre, the narrative of the transformation will include dramatic and emotional episodes, discussions on architectural and aesthetic decisions and matters of taste, and inspiration visits to other galleries in London in the quest for ‘The Perfect Gallery’. RBKC Forum meeting

The RBKC Forum - an discussion group open to artists connected in any way with the Borough - came to my and Denise's studio this week. Getting all my drawings out I realised I had almost finished the set. Now want to make a series with the same size rectangle to explore very tiny changes in a shape. Am also beginning to play with grey, what shape it should be, the relationship of paint to screen colour, transparency vs opacity etc. Lovely to paint directly on the wall again. Denise lent me the catalogue of Gerhard Richter's Eight Grey exhibition....

I watched Robert Hughes' documentary 'The Mona Lisa Curse' on Saturday
about the commodification of art. In the background wps art radio was
playing. I've found it and have been listening to it since - a mixture
of music and interviews with composers, artists and poets. It's an

Back to Aix for the weekend to see my favourite mountain. One minute it's tiny and far away and the next dark grey and looming. The sharp March sunlight makes it seem like an elephant.

Went to the Chris Ofili show at Tate Britain. May suggest R goes (GCSE trip) - lots of ideas about playing with paint and materials as well as popular images. There is an event on 14th and 21st March 11.00 - 17.00 Bring the Noise.

I've just worked out how to print a contact sheet on photoshop. File...automate...contact sheet 11 and choose file. Now I can print off all my photos and see which ones are duplicated everywhere on my computer.

Seizure

Took Robbie and Jack (both doing GCSE art) to Seizure. http://www.artangel.org.uk/projects/2008/seizure A success. Then to Miroslaw Balka How it is which they were a bit disappointed with. They felt the box should have been much deeper to make them feel disorientated.

I have been working on a series of paintings and sculptures about rectangles and how we see so much of the world through them. The rectangles are made out of left over wood from my local wood merchant and pigment with acrylic, wax or oil, which I sand or polish until it seems to have the right presence. From there I am drawing shapes that I feel fit within each rectangle, and am making three dimensional versions of these out of cinder blocks. Each piece relates to the others but is as pared down as it can be in its own right. There is a great quote by Einstein that I found this week “As simple as possible, but no simpler” which sums up really well what I am trying to do. Here are a few photos – of my studio and what I’ve been doing.
